The table below, compiled using information from the
Health & Safety Executive gives an indication of the number of First Aiders required in the work place:

The numbers given in the table are minimum requirements.
You should then have extra First Aiders to take account of the following:
 

      Large Sites:
First Aiders should be in close proximity to all areas. They should be able to get to a casualty in 45 seconds.

 

      Isolated Work Locations:
Cover should be provided as necessary.

      Foreseeable absences:
Cover should remain adequate even when First Aiders are absent on such occasions as annual leave.

      Shift Work:
Every shift should be adequately covered.

Medium Risk
e.g. light engineering, assembly work, food processing, warehousing.
Fewer than 20 At least 1 Appointed Person at all times
20 to 50 At least 1 First Aider at all times
More than 50 At least 1 Additional First Aider for every 100 employed (or part thereof)
Higher Risk
e.g. any construction work, slaughter houses, chemical manufacture, work with machinery or sharp instruments.
Fewer than 5 At least 1 Appointed Person at all times
5 to 50 At least 1 First Aider at all times
More than 50 At least 1 additional First Aider for every 50 employed.
